Home-buying can be a daunting experience, there’s no doubt about that, but it becomes a little less daunting with the help of the Internet. As you might expect, we dug up as many resources as possible and found that some were better than others. If you are in the process of buying a house, take a look at our list of the best home buying websites and resources on the web:

Zillow (click here):

Zillow can be overwhelming because their goal is to be your number one online real estate service. They offer all kinds of tools and information, but one of their best features that we found is their “Zestimate.” A Zetimate is their best educated guess as to what a house is worth based upon several factors. This is extremely helpful when you’re buying a house because it helps your determine if the price a seller is asking is reasonable, or at least in the ball-park. Of course it’s important to remember that it is just an estimate.

Another helpful aspect to this site is that they offer “last sale” and tax information for many houses. The “last sale” information, if available, tells you how much the house last sold for. Property tax information is also helpful. Depending on the area, property taxes can make or break your decision to buy a home. It’s nice to have it in one location so that you don’t have to go and track it down.

Redfin (click here):

Redfin is a fairly new service and the disappointing part about all of this is that their service isn’t offered everywhere quite yet. In fact, it’s pretty limiting with service currently offered in the following areas: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC.

If you’re one of the lucky ones and live in a serviced area, you’ll really find their site helpful. One of the first things we noticed with Redfin is that they tend to post listings before other sites do. Shortly after a house was listed on the MLS (multiple listing service – a US based service that consolidates listings of homes), it appeared on Redfin.

Another feature we took advantage of was signing up for a Redfin account. Doing this allowed us to get daily listing updates, and save and store the listings we found that we were interested in.

There’s a whole other aspect to this site that we never got involved in which is using a “Redfin Agent.” They offer you money if you choose to purchase a home with one of their agents, but we never took this route.

Trulia (click here):

Trulia is helpful, partially because they have a full-service website, but also an iPhone App. The most helpful features we found with Trulia is that they make it easy for you to view homes where the prices have recently dropped, and those that have scheduled upcoming open houses. For any particular city you are looking to buy in, they let you know what the average listing price was from week to week.

Others:

Hotpads.com

Yahoo Real Estate

Have a website you found helpful when purchasing a price? Perhaps a site that caters to countries other than the United States? Let us know…

Distribution lists make it easy for you to send one message to multiple people that you frequently email without needing to enter in all of the email addresses individually, every single time. In a nutshell, a Distribution list is a collection of contacts. When you go to send an email after creating a Distribution List, you enter the name of the list in the “To” field, and then anybody who is part of the list will receive the email.

How to Create a Distribution List in Outlook 2007

Open-up Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

Click the drop-down arrow next to “New” (the same “new” you click when you want to create a new message), then select Distribution List

You can also click Ctrl + Shift + L

A new window will appear once you’ve clicked on “Distribution List” and from there you’ll select the contacts that you would like to be a part of the list, and give it a name.

The name for my distribution list in the example above is “Family.” Once I enter a name, then I can click “Select Members.” This pulls up my contacts list so that I can choose which individuals I would like to be a part of my “Family” list. You can add members by double-clicking on each name. Once all members are selected, you’ll click “Save & Close.”

After your list is created, you will see the name of the Distribution List listed in your contacts. Think about how useful this feature could be! Maybe you have several groups of people that you email at work, or a group of friends that you frequently send messages too. Once you get the lists set-up, they can be a huge time-saver for you.

Seeing that Ashley and I are still relatively new to the Mac world we are still finding some little gems that demonstrate Apple’s eye for detail. A fine example of this is something I saw on the help page Apple developed to explain what Exposé is. It was there that I found out you can drag and drop files from one window to another using Exposé:

If you need to drag a file from one window to another, start dragging the item, press F9 to see all windows, drag the item over the target window until the window becomes active, or press F9 again, and drop in your item.

If you need to copy elements between two windows in the same application, start dragging the item you wish to copy, press F10 to display all open windows for that application, drag the item over the target window until it becomes active or press F10 again, and drop it.

I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s come in handy for me on numerous occasions. Having the ability to drag and drop using Exposé means that I no longer have to think about placing the two windows side-by-side before performing this operation. Plus you can make it a little more useful by putting these tips to use:

Setup a hotcorner that will launch Exposé. That way you don’t have to worry about pressing the Exposé shortcut on the keyboard.

Instead of hovering over a program in Exposé and waiting for it to become active you can press the Spacebar to immediately be taken to that application.

This trick also works with the shortcut that shows your desktop (F11). It makes dragging items to/from your desktop a breeze.

When I first started using a Mac getting accustomed to using Exposé felt like more of a chore than anything. I have to admit that it has really grown on me though, and I now use it all the time.

Keep in mind that this works only for single words. If you have a phrase or a paragraph that needs translating, you’ll still need to use Google’s full Translate service. Also, in our trials we translated english words to another language like Spanish or French. We do not know how well it works when you start in a language other than English.

Last year we provided a thorough guide on how you can recover lost bookmarks in Firefox, but as an anonymous reader pointed out some of the tips provided no longer work in Firefox 3. This is because Mozilla revamped the bookmarking system so that it performs better, and is also capable of more advanced functionality such as tagging. The good news is that recovering lost bookmarks in Firefox 3 is even easier than it was before!

What you need to do now is go to Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Restore, and then select the date of one of the backups (the date is in year-month-day format). You’ll then receive a prompt asking if you’re sure you want to replace all of your existing bookmarks with those from the backup, and once you hit the OK button you’ll be all set.

Any site you’ve bookmarked since the last backup will be lost since this does replace your current bookmarks. For that reason you may want to consider performing a manual backup before proceeding with restoring your old bookmarks. This can be done using the Backup option located right above the Restore option. You’ll then be asked where you want to save the file, and restoring them is as simple as going to Restore -> Choose File.

Feel free to adjust the number of automatic bookmark backups kept by Firefox 3, which is still the same from our previous guide.

Of course you can, and there’s a good chance that you can free up hundreds of megabytes by removing them.

According to Sun the reason they leave the old versions of Java on your computer is to ensure that older Java applications will work even if they’re not compatible with the newest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE):

The latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is always the recommended version as it contains updates and improvements to previous versions. The latest available version is always compatible with the older versions.

You can keep older versions of the JRE installed, in case you have an applet/application that still depends upon a previous version.

The chances of you actually needing one of these older versions probably isn’t high, and removing them can definitely free up some space on your hard drive. Sun provides instructions on how to uninstall older versions of Java, but it can be a bit tedious if you’ve got several updates to remove.

The easier method is to use a free program called JavaRa, which JMBAKE pointed out. It only works on Windows, but the nice thing is that it doesn’t require any installation. Just download the file, extract the contents, and you’re ready to go.

When you launch JavaRa you should see a simple interface just like this one:

It’s all pretty self explanatory, but here’s a list of the things that you can do:

Remove old versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Update to the latest version of JRE

Remove the Java startup entry

Remove the Sun download manager

Remove useless JRE files

Nothing like having a little extra breathing room on your PC.

The true power lies in the keyword system that it comes with, but it might take a little time to really understand how it works. Our video demonstration should be enough to get your creative juices flowing though.

The whole reason that I created this extension was because I saw how it could make me more productive. I laid out a plan with the features I knew I’d use (namely a keyword system), and dove in head first. The end result didn’t turn out half bad, and what I want to show you today are some ways that you can maximize the usefulness of the extension.

1) Using Firefox’s Built-in Keyword System

Our extension uses Google to do all of its searching, and I know that a lot of you would love for our extension to search more sites directly. In fact that is one of the things I’ve received the most requests about. The reason why that isn’t feasible is that there aren’t many sites out there that are designed to return results in a text-based fashion that is performance friendly. Google, on the other hand, is capable of returning search results in a no-frills format that we can quickly pull data from. Other sites… not so much.

If you want to search sites directly the best way you can do this is by setting up a keyword search in your browser that is identical to one of your CyberSearch keywords. For example, setup a keyword search in Firefox for Google called “goog”. The CyberSearch extension ships with a keyword already named “goog”, and these will work well together.

Once you have duplicated some of your important keywords you can start taking advantage of them. Now when you type “goog” followed by a word/phrase it will show you the instant results in the address bar thanks to our extension. If you don’t see what you need just press enter and the built-in Firefox keyword search will kick in. You’ll then be taken directly to the results page for the keyword that you have setup.

2) Search More Specific Pages

When you’re setting up a keyword there’s a good chance that you’ll restrict the search to a specific domain, but don’t be afraid to use longer URL’s to get precisely the data you’re looking for. What do I mean? Imagine setting up a keyword search that returns results for Firefox add-ons. Don’t vaguely specify “mozilla.org” as the domain you want to search. Instead use “addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/” so that only pages from the Firefox add-ons site are returned.

3) Search Multiple Sites Simultaneously

Sure it’s nice being able to search one site with a keyword, but don’t forget that you can also search multiple sites! In the website URL field all you have to do is separate multiple sites by commas. Then when you perform a search using that keyword the results from all of those sites will be intermingled.

When would this be useful? There are a few different things that pop into my mind, but one of my favorites would be searching all of your favorite BitTorrent sites at the same time.

In Firefox 3 Mozilla wanted to make dragging and dropping items in the browser a little more intuitive, and so they decided to show a preview of the item your dragging underneath the mouse cursor. On Windows and Macs the image should be translucent like the tab preview shown in the screenshot above, but on Linux the preview image is not transparent.

I’ve been wanting to disable the preview image for quite some time because it’s more difficult when trying to drag and drop things. For example, I frequently bookmark sites by dragging the tab into the bookmark sidebar, and I always drop the tab onto the folder where I want the bookmark to reside. Sometimes the preview image gets in the way, kind of like it does in the screenshot above where it’s a little difficult to see the “drop indicator.”

How can you disable this feature? Miles left a comment on one of our Firefox tips pointing to a setting that will instantly disable the preview image. To do this you need to open the about:config and find the nglayout.enable_drag_images setting. Set the value to false by double-clicking on it, and the changes will be applied without needing to restart the browser. Refer to this article if you need help using about:config.

Once the setting has been changed to false anything that you try to drag and drop will merely show a box outline instead of the preview image, and this makes it a lot easier to see where exactly you’ll be dropping the item.

A million thanks to Miles for digging up this hidden gem!

One of the things that I really don’t like on a Mac is how it includes hidden files and folders when you create a ZIP archive. The biggest culprit that I’ve found is a .DS_Store file that is added to every folder you view in Finder, and it’s used to save things like your view options options and icon positions. I can’t imagine anyone who would want to include files like these in a ZIP archive.

I did a little research to figure out how I can get around this without using another app to do the compression, and that’s when I came across a free Automator workflow bundle by Mike Piontek. Once you go through the brief installer you’ll find that there are five new Automator workflows whenever you right-click on a file or folder in Finder. These are located in the More -> Automator menu as seen in the screenshot above.

Here are the five different things that are included in the single download:

Create Clean Archive – This Automator action creates a clean zip format archive (.zip) that’s ready to share with others. Macintosh resource forks and desktop files will be ignored so they don’t get in the way on other operating systems.

Make Names Web-Friendly – This Automator action converts the names of the selected files to all lowercase, removes accents, changes spaces to underscores or dashes, and converts other special characters to underscores or dashes.

Change Extensions – This Automator action will change the file extension of the selected files. Very useful if you need to change a bunch of files from .html to .php, for example.

Save for Web – This Automator action will export images in JPEG, GIF, or PNG format using Adobe Photoshop CS (for higher quality images) or Preview (for faster conversion without opening an application). Additional options allow you to constrain the image to a maximum width and height, and sharpen the image after resizing.

Create Symbolic Link – This Automator action creates a symbolic link for each of the selected files. A symbolic link is similar to an alias, except that many applications, including the Create Clean Archive action, will see only the file points to rather than the alias itself.

By default all five of these Automator actions will be placed in your Finder menu. If you decide that you don’t want some of them just navigate to the following folder to remove them individually:

~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder

Being a new Mac user I can easily say that Automator is becoming a new love of mine because of simple tricks like these.

We’ve already shown how to backup data from email programs on Windows, and so we thought it was only fair to do the same for Mac users. Using a free tool cleverly named Email Backup you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that you have a backup of your Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Eudora, or Thunderbird data. For those of you who have suffered the heartache of data loss you know just how valuable a backup like this can be.

Email Backup is really nothing fancy because all it does is copy the data and configuration files for the various applications into the location you specify. To restore the data from a backup you’ll have to manually copy it back into the respective directory, which for Apple Mail is
/Users/USERNAME/Library/Mail/
.

The one nice thing about this is that you can schedule a backup to occur at any time and on any day. You can additionally choose where you want the backups to be stored:

While it’s nothing too fancy this application can really come through in a bind. Once you have it setup you don’t really have to worry about anything else. And hopefully in a future version the developer will include a way to restore a backup from within the application.

We don’t know why shipment tracking services are so intriguing lately, but they are. Maybe it’s because we’ve had a handful of packages shipping (selling on eBay) and being delivered lately. Last week we wrote about how you can use Twitter to track your UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL shipments, so now today we’re going to explain how to track your UPS or FedEx packages via email instantly, while on the go. It’s actually pretty simple.

All you’ll need is the tracking number, and then you’ll need the following email addresses:

track@fedex.com

totaltrack@ups.com

With your tracking number in hand, go to compose a new email. Leave the subject line blank, address it to whichever service is delivering (or shipping) your package (either FedEx or UPS), and then put the tracking number of the package in the body of the message and send it. Within seconds of sending the message, you’ll receive a reply with the status of your shipment. It’s really as simple as that!

Now some of you are thinking to yourself that you can just go to either FedEx or UPS, and enter your tracking number to get updates, so how is this useful? This will probably be most useful for those of you who are away from your computer, but have a mobile phone with the Internet enabled and want an update.

I never thought Opera was going to make this possible, but I’m pleased to say that in the new Opera 9.5 you can actually customize how many Speed Dial entries are shown at any one given time! They are so incredibly useful that I’ve found myself needing more than the nine that comes standard in the browser. I will say that the Opera team could have made it easier for users to customize how many Speed Dial entries are shown at a time, but I’m just grateful that in Opera 9.5 this can now be changed. Here’s what you need to do:

Note the path to the Opera Preferences (type about:opera into the address bar to find it). Also, make sure you have at least one site added to Speed Dial already.

Close Opera. This is important to prevent Opera from modifying the configuration file we’re about to edit.

Open speeddial.ini file in any text editor from the Opera Preferences directory that you found Step 1.

Add the following lines (somewhere near the top is fine), and adjust number of rows & columns to meet your needs. I’ve got the speeddial.ini file open in the background in the screenshot above, and you can see that I set the number of rows and columns to 5.

[Size]
Rows=5
Columns=5

Start Opera.

You’ll need to play around with the number of rows and columns until you find something that fits your screen well. In my example I added five rows and five columns, but you’ll notice that some of the rows don’t show up. Opera requires a minimum size for each of the Speed Dial entries, and if they don’t all fit they will simply run off the screen. Once that happens there’s no way to access them since scrollbars aren’t shown.

Options like these would probably be better served in the opera:config advanced options area, but hey, I won’t complain. Speed Dial is Opera’s most useful feature for me, and having more of them makes it even better.

One thing that you should note is that Opera Link will keep your Speed Dials synchronized across multiple computers, but it will only do work for the first nine entries you have. So don’t expect to all 50 of your Speed Dial entries to appear on all of your computers running Opera. Sorry, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

One of the Firefox extensions that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with is Update Scanner. It is capable of scouring any website for changes, and can display a notification within the browser when it finds that the content is different. That’s handy for websites that don’t have RSS feeds, or maybe you’re waiting for an online store to get something in stock. Either way, being able to scan a website for changes can come in handy.

If you don’t use Firefox, or don’t want to install the extension there is always the freeware WebMon application that should do the trick. As you can see in the screenshot above you can monitor an unlimited number of websites for changes, and you can customize how often it checks for changes. When it finds that something is different it will, by default, display a notification similar to this one:

Alternatively you can have it execute a program, open a website, or play a sound when it finds an update.

When setting up a website for the first time you might want to make note of the Specify content to check button in the bottom-left corner. By using that feature you can narrow down the area on the website that you want to be monitored, which I’ve done in this example:

If you plan to use this feature it’s best if you understand a little bit of HTML, otherwise it might look like a lot of gibberish to you. For those of you that already know at least the basics of HTML this feature will be rather useful.

The program uses just 7MB of memory on my computer, which isn’t bad at all. If you’re in the market for a website monitoring program this should be just what the doctor ordered.

Get WebMon for Windows (100% free)

One of the things that I found interesting when getting used to my Mac was that Apple didn’t include a way to quickly access the connected drives from the Dock. Sure they place the shortcuts on the desktop for everything that’s connected, but navigating to the Dock is much faster in my opinion.

I didn’t think adding any connected drives and devices to the Dock would be too difficult since you can already add any folder, which will then create a stack. After a little searching I came across an easy solution on the MacRumors forum:

Open Finder and press Shift+Command+G

Type /Volumes into the window that appears, and press Go

The Finder window should now display a hidden folder called Volumes located at the root of your hard drive, and in it are shortcuts to all of the connected drives/devices

Drag the Volumes folder onto your Dock to create a stack from it (switch to column view in Finder if you don’t see the Volumes folder)

Whenever you click on the newly created stack it will pop-out with any DVD’s, USB drives, cameras, and external drives that might be connected to your computer. Pretty cool, huh?

The new Gmail interface is no exception. If you try visiting the email service in Opera you’ll be forced to use the old-school version of Gmail that doesn’t have color-coded labels, among other things.

If you’re using Opera 9.5 Beta you’ll be happy to know that the new Gmail works pretty well… if you know how to get to it. We’ve previously talked about how you can bypass browser detection in Gmail, and it’s as simple as pointing Opera to:

mail.google.com/gmail?nocheckbrowser

You’ll also want to bookmark that URL so that you have quick access to it in the future, but by using that you should be able to gain access to what’s commonly called Gmail 2. If you don’t see the new stuff right away you’ll want to click the “Newer Version” link in the upper-right corner.

I’m sure many of you are wondering why the heck Google is blocking Opera from using the new interface if it works so well. First off the current stable build of Opera (version 9.27) has some serious issues with Gmail 2. I couldn’t even compose a message using it. Opera 9.5 is a heck of a lot better, but that’s still in Beta, and so Google isn’t going to officially support that yet. Although even in Opera 9.5 Beta the contact manager doesn’t work quite right.

Unfortunately fixing the remaining Gmail 2 problems lies in the hands of the Opera developers, because Google obviously doesn’t see enough value in making their services fully compatible with Opera. The main functionality works fine in Opera 9.5 Beta, but you’ll have to remember to use the special URL above if you want to get the latest and greatest Gmail 2 features.

Thanks for the tip Cody!

That’s mostly because of applications that have not yet been programmed to run in a general user mode, and they are still accustomed to running as a privileged user just as they did in XP.

If you’ve chosen to leave UAC enabled then there are a few different ways you can selectively bypass the UAC prompt without disabling it all together. One way is to take ownership of files, but there is also another rather clever method that takes advantage of the Task Scheduler. Here’s some background as to how it works:

Few days ago I tried to run some scheduled task that required admin privileges. After some investigation I found out that you can specify that scheduled task can run using highest privileges.

These scheduled tasks don’t prompt you with UAC. First idea that came to my mind was – OK, so if scheduled task runs on demand, then it should in fact disable UAC for specific program? I tried it and it worked… So for some time I was using on demand scheduled tasks – for example instead of running MMC I run Schtasks /Run /TN “Elevated\MMC”.

The end result is a context menu entry that shows up whenever you right-click on a file or shortcut (as pictured above). It’s labeled “Elevate me,” and works exactly as advertised. When you select that option from the menu the program runs as an administrator without a single UAC prompt.

To confirm this I ran the command line and tried to release my IP address. When running the command line normally it wouldn’t let me make the change, but using the “Elevate me” option made it possible to release my IP. And I never had a UAC prompt asking if I wanted to confirm the action.

You can also turn this into a shortcut so that you won’t even have to right-click on a file to elevate it, but you really only have to do that if a particular program always needs to run as an administrator.

Download Elevator [via Lifehacker]

I’m not sure how often you deal with iCal calendars in your browser, but I come across them from time to time. Normally it’s because of friends or family that want to share their schedules with me.

Firefox 3 has improved on the way it handles launching applications for files that you’re downloading, and this also reaches out to iCal calendars. In the screenshot to the right I was trying to open an iCal calendar, and seeing that I’m on a Mac it lists iCal given that it is the default calendar application.

The other thing you may notice is that it also lists 30Boxes.com as a viable option to open up the iCal file. Most of you are probably familiar with the service already, but it’s essentially just an online calendar that anyone can sign-up and use for free. In some sense it is similar to Google Calendar. Why is this such a big deal? Because you’ll get an instant preview by selecting 30 Boxes as the “application” you want to use to open the file. You’ll be able to navigate from one month to the next checking out the events, and can click on them to see more details. Heck, you don’t even have to sign-up for the service in order to utilize the full power of the preview.

I don’t know about you, but it’s really nice having the option to preview files like this in your browser before you actually take the time to open them in an application. Now I’m just hoping that other online services will be able to integrate into Firefox just like this so that we can preview PDF’s, documents, and more without having to download a thing.

And as it stands right now you can’t add your own web application to the list, but you can remove them by going into the preferences and pulling up the Applications tab. Well, I shouldn’t say that you can’t add them because you can by going through the about:config screen. There’s just no pretty interface to do it.

Rafe Needleman pointed out how setting up a new Gmail account would be a really simple solution for parents who want to keep a record of what is going on in their children’s lives. He said, “although it’s not elegant, it sure is easy.” With that in mind, we thought about how easy it would be to take this idea a little further and to use Gmail as a journal.

The easiest way to go about doing this would probably be to create a new email address for your journal so that its sole purpose is to keep a record of what’s going on in your life. Think about how simple yet really organized this could be. You could create labels for each month of the year so that later on, it’ll be easy to go back and read entries from a certain date. You could even create a simple filtering system (learn how here). Including important pictures from events that happened in your life would be a cinch and then they’d always be there for later reference.

One benefit of using Gmail is that your whole journal is searchable. Want to find the entires where you talked about a wedding you went to months or years ago? Just search for wedding and Gmail will pull up every “message” that had the word wedding in it. Another benefit is that it’s private. You don’t have to worry about anybody snooping into your business because the messages are only there for you to see, unless of course you wanted to share it, and then you could easily forward the entry on to someone.

Again, life Rafe said, it’s not that this is an elegant solution for keeping a journal, but it is very simple to do.

Ashley and I have been getting acquainted with our new MacBook Pro’s over the last few weeks, and things are going pretty well. I really wanted to get an external hard drive so that I could do Time Machine backups, but I didn’t want to fork out an arm and a leg for one. A few days ago I managed to “come across” a clearanced 300GB external drive at a local store for $27, and I just couldn’t pass up the deal.

Unfortunately they didn’t have another one so that both Ashley and myself could utilize the Time Machine backups, and from what I had heard previously the only way to to wirelessly do backups was with (of course) an Apple Time Capsule. As it turns out you can do backups wirelessly as long as the target hard drive is hooked up to another Mac computer.

The first thing I had to do was pull up Finder and navigate to the external Time Machine hard drive on the remote computer:

I knew that the Time Machine hard drive was mounted and ready once it showed the little “eject” symbol next to its name. Then I jumped over to the Time Machine preferences where I could select the drive I wanted to use to perform the backups. Since the remote drive was mounted I was able to see it in the list, and it had the remote computer’s name in parenthesis after it:

I selected that drive and the backup was off and running. What I ended up doing, however, was connecting the external drive directly to both computers for the initial backup because it can take awhile the first time through. After that, however, the backups are performed hourly and only the changes are synchronized which is much more suitable for a wireless connection. So this actually works out pretty well.

And no, you don’t have to go manually mount the Time Machine drive in order for your backups to run. I thought that you might have to do that, but once you’ve established the remote drive you want to use it will automatically make the connection whenever necessary. Neat, huh?

I’m still not a huge fan of the whole “spacey” interface for browsing your Time Machine backups, but that’s okay because they can still be browsed through Finder.

I’ve slowly made the move back to using an email client full-time ever since Gmail started offering IMAP support. By using IMAP both my online Gmail account and all of my email client are kept in sync with each other, which is nice since I read my mail on multiple devices throughout the day. The only problem is that some of my email clients automatically download messages that Google has already flagged as spam, and it’s frustrating thinking that I have received a new email just to find out that it was a spam message.

DaComboMan pointed out in the forum a nice little tip that can get around that for me. Basically all you have to do is create a filter that either marks spam as read or actually deletes it as it comes in. Here’s what you have to do:

Create a new filter (instructions here)

In the Has the words field enter in:spam

Check either the Mark as read or Delete it box depending on what you would like to do with the spam

I didn’t go as far as to delete the spam because having it automatically marked as read will solve the headaches that I was getting. If you have found yourself in the same boat where you get notifications when new spam arrives then hopefully this will keep what sanity you have left. Doing either of those things will also eliminate the “new spam counter” that you see when visiting the Gmail website.
